Tattoo Aftercare

TATTOO AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS
Follow these steps to support healing and preserve your tattoo’s quality.

1. Keep Your Tattoo Covered

If wrapped with a bandage:

  • Leave the bandage on for 1–2 hours, then begin the aftercare process below.

If covered with Saniderm (or second skin):

  • Saniderm can remain on for 3–4 days, as long as it stays sealed.

  • If it begins to peel or exposes any part of the tattoo, remove it immediately—this can trap bacteria and lead to infection.

  • A buildup of plasma or ink under the Saniderm (a bubble) is normal—do not poke or drain it.

Important:
If you notice redness, swelling, or irritation around the edges of the Saniderm, remove it immediately. This reaction often occurs within the first 24 hours and can cause scarring if ignored.

2. Wash Your Tattoo Gently

  • Once the covering is removed, wash the tattoo using lukewarm water and a fragrance-free, liquid soap (e.g., Dr. Bronner’s Unscented Baby Soap).

  • Gently clean the area with clean hands—do not scrub.

  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel or let air dry. Avoid cloth towels.

  • Wash your tattoo twice a day for the first two weeks.

Avoid:

  • Hot water

  • Harsh soaps

  • Exfoliating products

3. Moisturize Consistently

  • After washing, apply a thin layer of unscented moisturizer (e.g., Lubriderm or Hustle Butter).

  • Apply 2–3 times daily to prevent drying and cracking.

  • Do not over-apply—too much moisture can suffocate the tattoo and slow healing.

Avoid:

  • Petroleum-based products (e.g., Vaseline)

  • Strong fragrances or alcohol-based lotions

4. What to Avoid During Healing

Avoid for at least 2–3 weeks:

  • Direct sun exposure

  • Swimming pools, lakes, rivers, hot tubs, hot springs

  • Baths (opt for showers instead)

For the first 48 hours:

  • Avoid intense workouts or activities that cause excessive sweating to reduce infection risk.

Do not pick or scratch your tattoo.

  • Itching is normal, but scratching can damage the healing skin and lift ink, affecting the final appearance.

Proper aftercare is essential to your tattoo’s healing and long-term appearance.
Follow these steps closely and contact your artist or a medical professional if you notice signs of infection (severe redness, pus, fever, etc.).
